Ares holds first Taiwan college PKI application competition

Ares International Corp. held the first Taiwan college PKI application competition on December 6, with ten college teams joining the event at the stadium of National Taiwan University (NTU).

Department of Management Information Systems, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) won the first place with the topic of "DRM-based Eyes TV". The second place belongs to Department and Graduate Institute of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Chaoyang University of Technology, whose topic is "Shared Automobile System with PKI as the Security Infrastructure". The third goes to the Information Management Department of Tamkang University, whose topic is "Outlook Live".

Representatives from the YunTech team indicated that the team focused on applying the right key management on the right aspect. In the future, the team aims to strengthen its identification capability. Representatives from the Chaoyang team said the team will focus more on encryption technology and concept for the PKI segment. The Tamkang team expressed that the e-key PKI application is safe and easy to learn.

All judges for the competition are experts in the PKI field: Nai-Seng Kuang, section chief, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Economic Affairs; Dr. Wei-Chung Hwang, deputy technical director, Internet Software Technology Division, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI); Dr. I-Long Lin, professor of Department of Information Management, Central Police University; James Wu, assistant vice president of Ares PKI Team.

With regards to the PKI application competition held by Ares, Kuang said the event has set an example for the information security industry while familiarizing the participants with the four major functions of PKI: authentication, integrity, non-repudiation and confidentiality. In the meantime, Kuang also stressed that it is not safe enough to input account and password. PKI technology can better solve Internet crime and e-business exchange security issues, Kuang added.

The promotion of PKI should start from the government, academic and enterprise segments, Kuang suggested, adding that colleges should open appropriate courses to teach the concepts of PKI security technology to promote information security awareness. The enterprise should regard the protection of business confidentiality as the top priority while the government bodies should stress more on the safety of identification of citizen e-services, Kuang noted.

Dr. Hwang, which has been pushing the PKI plan, said although PKI applications are various, the awareness of such technology is yet to be cultivated.

Dr. Lin said that PKI is one segment of the information security area, with mature software tools available for use such as the combination with USB and e-mail to manage daily routines. In addition, the promotion of PKI in the academic field can start from strengthening the awareness of PKI and adding information security classes. For the government bodies, PC or notebooks should embed card-readers for PKI protection. In the future, the competition can include general AP, RFID and anti-data leakage tools for the competition topics, Lin indicated.
