Optimize production manufacturing management – MES creates new way of thinking

(The content of the article includes excerpts of the speech by Jacky Tseng, production manager of Ares International Corp., at the Forum)

How to use different ways of thinking to launch production manufacturing management? The MES (Manufacturing Execution System) is a tool and is not omnipotent. Before introducing the system, ask not what the system can provide. Rather, ask yourself what you really need. The system records all events in the factory, from ERP and the overall production management of the production line. The key of the structure is whether all flows among the machinery can be clearly presented and what is the degree of connection among each link. Therefore, related systems such as HR, report and production resume have to be connected with MES via automation.

The often-used MES modules include: Working in Process (WIP), which covers settings for factory operation process, production process, production area, etc. Among these, the production resource setting allows execution conditions for foreign control over material records and production numbers for various factories, which are extremely helpful for international corporations; Engineering Data Collection (EDC) aims at reducing manual errors; Statistical Process Control (SPC) allows analysis in different latitudes; material management emphasizes on material number record to facilitate tracking problematic products, which is closely related to green IT;

pre-maintenance means an automatic alert mechanism according to the frequency and cycle settings while launching component control according to the setting status; report is the final output and allows personalized homepages according to various management roles.

Other system integration structure requires an accurate control over the data of every step among the production process, with ERP and MES to be set at the beginning and ending positions, between which the enterprise will place information that are to be integrated. The key lies in the module-based process for fear of affecting the existing system.

After introducing the system, various applications can be launched according to the events generated during the production process. For example, it only takes two hours to make a complete bulletin board; the universal search serves as the Google Search for the factory to generate the search page according to the client’s needs. It all depends on what information the client wants to present.

What is the role of IT in the production process? Besides the aforementioned benefits, all issues such as factory capacity, inventory pressure, performance indicator, unified production process control, production resume tracking can be presented via IT. Currently, various enterprises in the traditional industries have introduced the system to prepare themselves for the future.
